Monthly fee, hours included, renewal date and what happens to anything unused. Set once, per client.

Work against it
Timers and timesheets log to the retainer like any project, so usage is live rather than reconstructed on the 30th.

It renews and invoices
On the renewal date the next month opens and the invoice drafts, with the usage already itemised.

Unused hours don't just vanish
Carry the balance forward with an expiry, or let it lapse. Per retainer, your call — and the client sees the same number you do.
